It’s been a while since I posted a Weekend Rulebreaker, but that doesn’t mean I’ve at all stopped bending fashion rules. If you had a look at my August Mood Board, you know my favorite fashion transgression of late is wearing boyfriend-style denim shorts day-to-night. Sparked by my fave personal looks and awesome street style I’ve spied, I pulled together this collection of denim-shorts looks to inspire you. As always, you can shop them directly and get detailed styling tips clicking through to Keaton Row. Happy Friday, Foxes. xo

First things first, pick the style of denim short that is best for your body and lifestyle.   Denim Shorts for Every Body Most folks wear denim shorts casually, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be super chic. Rocking out to Beyonce and JayZ in concert this week, I saw sooooo many stylish girls in denim shorts and plaid shirts whose street style inspired this look. Tie some plaid around your waist and it’s the perfect layer for cool summer nights or wearing shorts into fall.

Casual Denim ShortsA denim-shorts combo I’ve worn on repeat this summer is a drapey cardigan+boyfriend shorts+wedge sandals. The juxtaposition of pretty and tough is perfect for get-togethers and days out with your most stylish friends. In this look, I made the combo even more modern by swapping a cardigan for an up-and-coming trend: a long, luxe kimono.

Ladies Who Brunch Denim ShortsI love to pair my denim shorts with tailored pieces for styling appointments. It’s an unexpected hard-soft combo that makes classic, ladylike pieces even more versatile. The combo may not be work-appropriate for everyone, so if that’s your story,  consider trying for daytime events, club meetings or lunch with the girls.

Tailored Denim ShortsThe streets of San Francisco (where summer may as well be winter) are full of girls rocking tights and denim shorts. It’s a particularly easy way to dress up denim shorts for nights out. The look is a little edgy, so play that up with your accessory choices. Rawr.
