It may be chilly outside, but the shops are sunny and bright (really, aren’t they always?). Spring style has sprung, Foxes! From photoshoots and buying markets to fashion presentations and client stylings, I’ve spent the last few weeks immersed in Spring fashion and thought I would share some top trends with you.

Overall, Spring style builds on Fall/Winter’s more-is-more mentality with lots of rich details and color, only brighter and more relaxed, just like the season itself.

Show Your Colors
Chris Benz Spring 2013With descriptive buzzwords like “sherbet hues” and “candy colors,” the Spring palette is so sweet, it will give you a cavity. This breaks down to lots of bright pastels with scrumptious names like nectarine, mint and lemon zest. You’ll see these tasty tones both as solids and incorporated into mix-and-match prints. If you’re not up for head-to-toe color, pair brights with neutrals. Classic black and white are always in style, but I like navy to really make brights pop.

What to Look for in the Shops:

  • Let the rainbow be your guide. It’s almost impossible to shop and not see a color-story display right now. Pick a shade you like and shop that section.
  • Shades of mint, orange and yellow, like those in the image from Chris Benz‘s Spring 2013 collection above, are some of the hottest hues this season. Always-popular blues and pinks are also plentiful.
  • If color scares you, dip your toe in the water with accessories. Colorful jewelry, handbags or even a contrasting belt will make an impact.

Rush to Print
IMG_0375 IMG_0376From colorblocking to flirty florals to abstracts, there’s a print for every taste this Spring. Look modern by not shying away from vivid colors or unconventional placements of print, like the fab surprise on the back of this jacket!

What to Look for in the Shops:

  • Bold, graphic prints. We’re not talking pinstripes or baby polka dots. Look for contrast and defined shapes in the patterns you pick– you want ’em to stand out.
  • Prints that draw the eyes where you want them. For example, de-emphasize a larger bottom by wearing a print blouse. Another great option is to use panels or a concentrated pattern to trick the eye into seeing a proportional silhouette.
  • Patterns you can mix-and-match like the navy & white combos in the photos of the dress and jacket from Neiman Marcus Walnut Creek above.
  • If mixing patterns makes you nervous, pick pieces that already have more than one pattern in them. Or, read this and you’ll be ready to go it alone.
  • When selecting prints, aim for patterns that are in proportion to your frame. In general, those who are taller or larger can wear large-scale prints more easily than someone who is petite.

Warm Weather Leather
IMG_0366Leather in Spring and Summer?! Crazy, right? Thank modern science for new fabrication techniques that make luxe leather lightweight and appropriate for all seasons.

What to Look for in the Shops:

  • A color that works for your wardrobe. Buttery neutrals like the motorcycle-style vest in this photo (Look for less: I just saw a very similar vest at H&M) will mix and match with most anything. While Springy brights add personality to your look. If you select a color, keep the shape simple and consider orange and blue hues for versatility.
  • Textured details. Perforations and laser-cut patterns are a couple of the ways leather gets lighter for Spring.
  • Target, Forever 21 and H&M offering leather looks for less. Before you buy, remember faux leather doesn’t breathe like real leather and you’re apt to be extra-warm in some styles during hot weather. Being cool may be worth paying a bit more to you.

Amazing Lace
Kollontai Claire SkirtThere’s something romantic and decadent about lace. This Spring and Summer, you’ll  see it as an all-over look and a dreamy accent. Lacy looks are freshest in nontraditional styles and colors. Be bold.

What to Look for in the Shops:

Relaxed Chic
Joie Olaya PantSpring silhouettes have an ease to them I struggled to put words to until I attended Neiman Marcus Walnut Creek’s Spring fashion presentation. They’ve coined “Relaxed Chic” to describe laidback looks that dress up and down with ease.

What to Look for in the Shops:

  • Style-conscious interpretations of comfy classics like sweatshirts. No sloppy silhouettes, choose more tailored options.
  • My must-have piece for Spring is a pair of silky pull-on pants. I especially like them in patterned fabrics like these Joie Olaya pants I fell in love with at Neiman’s Spring presentation. When you pick a pair for yourself, look for those that have minimal pleats at the waist band and remember to keep your body type in mind. Ensure the length and fit flatter you.
